The Holy Land is important historically because of its biblical significance. The Ten Commandments, the two Testaments of the Bible, and the writings of the prophets are among the most important works of world literature. The land where these scriptures were written and the land where they were originally delivered to mankind has a special place in the religious hearts of all three monotheistic faiths. Jerusalem is the holiest city to the three religions and the city where the Temples stood.
Being the physical home of the three major religions, it should also be noted that the region around Jerusalem is home to several important archaeological sites. These include Bethlehem, where Jesus was born; Jericho, where he turned water into wine; and the Dead Sea, where he performed many of his miracles. Today, the city of Jerusalem is the undivided capital of Israel. It is also the most-visited city in the world. An estimated 50 million people visit Israel each year, making it one of the top ten tourist destinations in the world.
In spite of its religious significance, modern Jerusalem is a thriving, modern city with a cosmopolitan flair. It is truly a city for everybody. It has a great restaurant and shopping scene, excellent museums and wonderful cultural events. And, of course, it has the Old City, where you can wander aimlessly for hours just marveling at the history and the religious significance of the place. In any case, no matter what your interests are, there is something for everyone in this amazing and exciting city.
